Job Description
Operations Manager
Reports to: Vice President of Operations
Scope:
It is the responsibility of the Operations Manager to assist the Bindery / Finishing and other Printing / Manufacturing Managers in ensuring the consistent day-to-day quality and efficiencies assurance of all manufacturing and embellishment operations of the company. As part of the management team, the Operations Manager participates in set up approvals and sign-offs and monitors the staff to ensure best practices in meeting and exceeding high standards in accuracy and quality of work.
The Operations Manager must aim to maximize the organization’s execution of consistently delivering predictable outcomes for all we do in manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure our operations consistently produce the expected accuracy and quality in manufacturing and embellishments in our work.
- To include but not be limited to: Offset and digital printed sheets, film lamination, UV flood and spot coat, foil stamp, emboss, mounting, score, die cut, guillotine cutting, folding, stitching, folder/gluer, shrink wrapping, packaging, FF process, product labeling and carton stacking, and other as needed.
- Understand the product knowledge and expectations for each job bag and function.
- Communicate job expectations and details; planning, monitoring, reviewing jobs and related activities.
- Make sure that all directions and expectations are understood clearly by all related associates.
- Assist Bindery, Finishing and Embellishment Managers and Printing Managers, supervisors and operators in machine set up / sign-off approvals as compared to proofs, samples and job ticket instructions.
- Monitor all equipment runs for sample pulls in a defined cadence and frequency.
- Exercise the right and obligation to stop any machine or operator if accuracy or quality are in question.
- Engage the appropriate manager as needed when escalation for remedy is required, in a timely and clear manner.
- Communicate with managers for any assistance needed in managing material staging and location, job ticket details, accuracy, quantities, etc. for all the job components before signing off for production.
- Confirm quality control checks throughout the processes.
- Confirm the accuracy of labels and packaging.
- Keep the necessary managers informed of any changes or urgencies in project requests or status that may be compromised.
- Communicate with department managers for shift priorities, including but not limited to; Prepress, Press, Digital, CSR, Bindery/Finishing, Fulfillment and warehouse.
- At the beginning of first and second shifts.
- Including shift transitions.
- Maintain all auditing logs from QC spot check.
- Design audit sheets in excel with intermediate complexity, as well as other related tools.
- Enter audits into excel.
- Track and monitor for root causes and improvements to be made.
- Coach data collection for full compliance.
- Know how to read a BOM to extract project details.
- Identify opportunities for improved quality, efficiencies and workflow best practices.
- Help make sure all load tags and job jackets are with the appropriate product at all times.
- Help make sure each job bag has 5 samples of the finished product (when appropriate).
- Assist team leads in keeping projects on approved schedule.
- Daily email updates to appropriate team associates, to include but not limited to; “Concerns”, “Job number”, “Project name”, “Status/Cost Center location”, “Next Cost Center date”, and “Ship date”.
- Attend morning production meeting, both daily Topps related meetings and special meetings as requested.
- Identify end-of-job overs/extras and/or tagged for upsell or destruction.
- Able and willing to work overtime hours, longer days and weekends when needed.
- Gain product knowledge as quickly as possible… many proprietary products and processes to be understood and mastered.
- All other duties as so assigned.
Specific Skills:
- Display well rounded knowledge and understanding of equipment and processes in our bindery, finishing and embellishment operations.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a commercial print environment.
- Strong communicator.
- File management a plus.
- Driven and focused in a way that promotes professional excellence.
- Strong leadership and influencer.
- Sound basic math skills.
- Able to be on your feet most of the day.
- Able to lift up to 40-pound packages.
- Able to operate basic equipment – pallet jacks, scales.
- Become intimate with the Epace operating system, load tags, data collection, reading job tickets, schedules, POs, and others.
- Bi-lingual (English / Spanish) is a plus.
